Capanno Tassoni stands at 1,317 metres in the Ospitale valley, below the Croce Arcana pass, along the Via Romea Nonantolana pilgrim route. It is named after Giovanni Tassoni, who owned a small sheepfold recorded here in 1870. In 1930 the Forestry Corps built a stone shelter on the site; during the war it was a partisan base on the Gothic Line, and since 1962 it has been a mountain hut, still owned by the Forni family.
The kitchen serves traditional dishes of the Modena Apennines, such as tagliatelle, tortelloni, crescentine and polenta, made with seasonal produce. There are 38 beds in seven rooms, from triples to a dormitory; you need to bring your own sleeping-bag liner. In winter the hut is a starting point for snowshoe walks.
It is a handy base for many trails in the Frignano Park, including the one to Lake Pratignano.
